Windows

Melta connects to Windows' own SSH server and hands its commands on to where your agents run: Ubuntu in WSL, or a Docker container. This page is the short version. The full guide is at Windows setup.

The steps

  1. Get Ubuntu (WSL). In PowerShell as administrator, run wsl --install, restart, and open Ubuntu once. Install your agents inside Ubuntu.
  2. Run the setup line. In the app, tap +, choose Tailscale, then Windows above the command, and copy it. Paste it into PowerShell or Command Prompt opened as administrator. It turns on Windows' SSH server, adds your phone's key, installs Tailscale, and installs Herdr and the notification plugin in Ubuntu.
  3. Enter what it prints. Type the Tailscale IP and user into Melta. The user is your Windows account name.

Where commands run

Each host has a Run Commands In setting (Edit on the host's screen):

  • Auto (the default): on Windows, Ubuntu in WSL when Herdr is installed there, else Windows itself. On a Mac or Linux computer, the computer itself.
  • Computer: the shell you log in to. On Windows that is Command Prompt or PowerShell: a terminal and Notes, no panes or chat.
  • WSL: Ubuntu, or the distro you name (as wsl -l shows it).
  • Docker: a running container you name. Herdr and your agents need to be installed in it. Melta uses Docker Desktop's command on Windows, or the one in Ubuntu.

The host's log says where commands run, and why when it couldn't get there.

Without WSL

A Windows PC without Herdr in Linux shows Panes and chat need Herdr in WSL. Open Terminal gives you Command Prompt or PowerShell on the phone, and Notes work as they are.

Keep it reachable

  • Leave Herdr running in Ubuntu. Closing every Ubuntu window can stop WSL, and Herdr with it.
  • Stop the PC from sleeping. A sleeping PC cannot be reached, and Melta cannot wake it.
