Host screen

The host screen shows everything running in Herdr on one computer, kept up to date as agents work, ask for input and finish. Tap a computer on the Hosts screen to get there.

The Hosts screen

Each computer you added is a row with its name, its user and address, and a status dot: Connected, Connecting…, Not connected or Error. The gear opens Settings and + adds a computer. Pull down to reload the list.

Workspaces, tabs and panes

Below the computer's name and status line, panes are grouped the way Herdr groups them: workspace, then tab, then pane, in Herdr's order. Workspaces with no panes left after filtering are hidden.

  • Workspace headers show the workspace name and its tab count.
  • Tab rows show the tab name, a coloured dot while an agent in it is working or blocked, and the number of panes.
  • Pane rows show the pane title, the last two folders of its working directory, and for agents a status on the right.

The icon on each pane tells you what it is at a glance:

IconStatus shownMeaning
Red handNeeds inputThe agent is blocked on a question or permission prompt.
Orange sparklesWorkingThe agent is mid-turn.
Green checkDoneThe agent finished a turn.
Blue sparklesThe agent's nameThe agent is idle, waiting for a prompt.
Grey terminalNothingA plain shell, or an agent whose status Herdr reports as unknown.

Status comes from Herdr. Melta subscribes to Herdr's live events over SSH, so changes show up without refreshing. Pull down to re-read everything from Herdr.

Collapse and expand

  • Tap a workspace header or a tab row to fold or unfold it. A folded workspace shows its tab and pane counts.
  • Long-press any header to fold or unfold everything at once.
  • The button next to the search bar does the same: collapse all, or expand all.

Melta remembers what you folded for each computer while the app is running.

The filter under the search bar has three choices:

  • All: every pane.
  • Agents: only panes with an agent.
  • Needs You: agents that are blocked or done. The badge counts the blocked ones. When there are none, it shows Nothing needs you.

The search bar, Search panes and agents, opens Jump To. Its red badge is the number of blocked agents.

Open a pane

Tap a pane to open it. Agent panes open in chat, or in the view you last used for that pane. Other panes open in the terminal.

Long-press a pane for more:

  • Open terminal and, for agents, Open chat.
  • Show on computer: selects the pane in Herdr on the computer.
  • New pane in this tab: splits a new shell next to it and opens it.
  • Close pane: asks first, because the process in the pane is terminated.

Create something new

The + at the top opens Open:

  • New Shell: a plain SSH login shell, outside Herdr.
  • Herdr TUI: the full Herdr interface in a terminal.
  • New Tab: a new tab in the focused workspace, opened in the terminal.
  • New Workspace: a new Herdr workspace, opened in the terminal.

The ⋯ menu

  • Connection Log: each connection step with a time stamp, and Reconnect now.
  • Agent Activity: recent blocked and finished events reported by the Melta plugin. Tap one to open that pane's chat.
  • Reconnect: closes the SSH connection and opens it again.
  • Edit Host: the computer's settings. See Settings.
