Settings

Melta has three places with settings: Settings for the app, Key bar for the terminal keys, and Edit Host for each computer. This page lists every option in each.

Settings

Open it with the gear on the Hosts screen.

Herdr prefix

The key the blue prefix button on the terminal key bar sends. Choose ⌃B (the default), ⌃A, ⌃Space, ⌃Q, or Other to type your own, such as ctrl+g. Set it to the same prefix as your Herdr config.

Account

Email shows the account you are signed in with. Settings sync to your account, so the prefix, text size, key bar and key haptics follow you to another phone. SSH keys never leave this device.

About

Version is the app version. Update shows Built-in, or the id of an update the app downloaded since it was installed. When an update is ready, Melta offers Restart Now or On Next Launch.

Sign Out and Delete account

Sign Out asks to confirm, then signs you out. Delete account opens the deletion form on getmelta.app; see Delete your account.

Key bar

Open it from Settings › Terminal › Key Bar. A preview of the bar sits at the top and updates as you change it.

• Eye button: hide or show a key. Hidden keys stay in the list, dimmed.
• Up and down arrows: move a key left or right on the bar.
• Bin button: delete a key you added. Built-in keys can only be hidden.
• Add a Key: pick Key Combo or Text, give it a Label, enter the value and tap Add Key.
• Reset to Defaults: puts back the original keys and order. Your own keys are lost.

A key combo is a key name with optional ctrl+, alt+ or shift+ in front. Key names are a single character, or one of enter, tab, esc, backspace, delete, up, down, left, right, home, end, pageup, pagedown, space and f1 to f12. A name Melta does not know is refused with Unknown key combo. A text key types its text exactly, such as git status.

Edit Host

Open a computer and tap ⋯ › Edit Host. Tap Save to apply changes. Saving closes the connection to the computer; tap Reconnect on its screen to connect with the new settings.

Name and SSH

• Name: what Melta calls the computer.
• Host: the computer's Tailscale name (like macbook) or its IP address.
• Port: the SSH port, 22 by default.
• User: your login name on the computer. Run whoami on it to check.

Changing Host or Port makes Melta forget the saved host key for the old address.

Sign-in

• New Key: a new key made on this phone. Saving replaces the current one.
• Current Key (or Existing Key): keep the saved key, or paste a different private key to replace it, with its Passphrase. Copy Saved Key copies the saved private key after a warning.
• Password: sign in with the computer's password, saved on this phone.

Add the key to your computer

Shown when a key is selected. Enter the computer's login Password and tap Add Key with Password to install the key from the phone; the password is used once and not saved. Copy Public Key copies the public key. See Keys and security.

Herdr

• Session: the Herdr session to use. Leave it empty for the default session.
• Notify when an agent needs input: notifications for blocked agents. On by default.
• Notify when an agent finishes: notifications for finished agents. On by default.

Herdr and notifications

The setup command for this computer, with its notification token, and with the selected key when there is one.

• Run It for Me: runs the setup command on the computer over the SSH connection, with the token only, so it does not add a key or install Tailscale, and shows the last lines of its output. It has no terminal, so it cannot answer password prompts.
• Copy Command and Share Command: to run it yourself.
• Generate New Token: replaces the notification token. The plugin stops working until you run the command again.

Remove Host

Deletes the computer from your account, with its notification history, and deletes its saved key or password on this phone.
