Fix notifications
A notification travels from Herdr, through the plugin and Melta's server, to your phone. Work through these checks in order; each rules out one link.
1. Look at Agent Activity
Open the computer in Melta and tap ⋯ › Agent Activity. Every event the server turned into a notification is listed there.
- Events are listed, but no push arrived: the computer side works. Go to step 6 and check the phone.
- No activity yet: the plugin has not reported anything. Continue with step 2.
2. Run the setup command again
Copy the command from ⋯ › Edit Host › Herdr and notifications and run it on the computer, or tap Run It for Me. It is safe to repeat. Under Melta plugin (agent notifications) you want to see:
✓ Installed (or updated) ✓ Linked to this computer in the Melta app
If you see something else instead:
- Couldn't add the plugin to Herdr. Start Herdr once, then run this command again. Start
herdron the computer and run the command again. - Couldn't download the plugin from https://getmelta.app: the computer could not reach the site. Check its internet connection.
- Couldn't save the notification token: run the command again.
- No ✓ Linked line at all: the command had no
--token. Copy it again from Edit Host, which always includes one.
3. Send a test notification
On the computer, run:
$ herdr plugin action invoke melta.notify.test
It sends a fake blocked event. You should get a notification titled Melta needs your input with Test notification in it. If it fails, the plugin reports one of these:
MELTA_TOKEN not set: the plugin has no token. Go back to step 2.POST to https://api.getmelta.app/notify failed: the request did not get through, or the server rejected the token. If you tapped Generate New Token or removed and added the computer again, the old token no longer works. Run the setup command from Edit Host again.
The token lives in .env inside the folder that herdr plugin config-dir melta.notify prints, as MELTA_TOKEN and MELTA_API.
4. Check the Herdr version
The plugin needs Herdr 0.7.0 or later. Check with herdr --version. The setup command updates Herdr with herdr update, unless you installed it with a package manager; then update it there, for example with brew upgrade herdr.
5. Check that Herdr sees the status
The plugin only fires when Herdr reports a pane as blocked or done. Herdr's blocked detection is strict, so a prompt it does not recognize shows as idle and sends nothing. Done is reported by Herdr's agent integrations, so install them:
$ herdr integration install claude $ herdr integration install codex
If the pane never shows Needs input or Done in Melta, no notification is sent for it.
6. Check the switches and the phone
- Switches. In Edit Host › Herdr, Notify when an agent needs input and Notify when an agent finishes must be on. The test in step 3 needs the first one.
- Permission. Melta asks after you sign in. If you declined, allow notifications for Melta in your phone's settings.
- Same account. Pushes go to the phones registered with the account that owns the computer. A phone registers when you sign in on it.
- Repeats. The same status from the same pane within 20 seconds is sent once.
7. Keep the computer awake
The plugin runs on your computer. If it is asleep or offline, nothing is sent. Melta cannot wake it.
